Pharaoh ants in Ottawa

Pharaoh ants are one ant commonly found in Ottawa. Worker Pharaoh ants are about 1/16 inch long and pale. Queen Pharaoh ants are longer (about ⅛ inch in length) and a bit darker; males of this species are black and around 1/16 inch.

You should know that Pharaoh ants take up nesting in humidity and warmth - and in close proximity to water or food. Their colonies can have thousands of ants and these pests do not have swarming flights. Pharaoh ant colonies also have more than one queen.

These ants favor foods with sugar but they can also consume insects. You may not notice Pharaoh ants, as they are small and their trails can be located behind walls and cabinets.

Types of Ottawa ants

What are some other ants you may see at your Ottawa property? Pavement ants fall into this group. They are not large; queens of this species are around ¼ inch in length and worker ants are around 1/16 to ⅛ inch long. As for color, they are light brown to black. They can live under the sidewalk or rocks.

Carpenter ants are larger ants (workers are ⅛ inch to ½ inch) and queens can be from ½ inch to ⅝ inch long. Carpenter ants are not the same as termites because they do not actually eat wood. Conversely, they make hollow spaces in it and this can result in property damage. Carpenter ant nests may be located in decaying wood that is moist, such as homes where wood is rotting. They can also be found in walls and attics.

Little black ants are also present in Ottawa. These ants are about about 1/16 inch long (that’s quite small) and dark brown to black in color. Colonies contain more than one queen and can be situated under stones, wood and other objects, or in the soil in the lawn.

European fire ants

Besides the other ants, you may also experience problems with European fire ants, which are reddish-brown and little. Worker European fire ants are around 3/16 inch in length. A nest can include multiple queens.

European fire ants are defensive of their habitat. They can sting, which can produce redness and a burning feeling. In the case of any serious reaction to a sting (European fire ant or other pest), get medical help right away.
