There are many DIY methods of preventing mosquitoes from biting you and your family that may help you enjoy your porch, deck or backyard. The object of most do-it-yourself methods will prevent mosquitoes from reaching you in order to feed in the first place. However, there are also methods of preventing mosquitoes from laying eggs and infesting your yard.
Rentokil Steritech cannot endorse these methods as being totally reliable and each of these still carries the risk that mosquitoes may bite.
There are things that you can do that will stop mosquitoes from entering your home and prevent you from being bitten while inside. These include:
Install screens - make sure that the screens you use have a fine mesh and mosquitoes will not be able to get in. They are outdoor creatures and really don't want to come inside, but they will follow where their senses take them to find a blood meal.
Repair screens - make sure that all of the screens around your home are in good condition. Don't open windows that have screens with holes in them.
Fountains/Waterfalls - if you have a pond or some other form of water in your yard, consider installing fountains or a waterfall to keep the water moving. Mosquitoes need still water to lay eggs and anything that keeps water moving will prevent them from doing this
Mosquitoes love to fly around and look for a meal in your backyard. There are some things that you can do to stop them from feasting on you and your family. These include:
Fans - mosquitoes are terrible flyers. They are so bad at it that using a fan to disturb the air is often a great way to keep them away from your porch or anywhere else outside.
Mosquito traps / zappers - mosquito traps and zappers play upon the mosquito's senses and lure them into the trap or into the zapper where they are taken care of. Installing these outside will reduce the number in the area.
Citronella candles - these use the natural grass oils from citronella that you can burn. The smoke is repellent to mosquitoes. Remember, however, that just because you have them on the table, you may be keeping mosquitoes away from your head and torso, but leaving your legs and feet exposed to mosquito bites.
Coils - you often see these green-colored units in stores. You burn them and they burn slowly, releasing a mosquito repellent smoke. Once again, remember that the mosquitoes stay away from where the smoke is, so they might be staying away from your head and upper body, but still attacking legs and lower extremities
There are risks involved in using do-it-yourself methods of keeping mosquitoes away. For example, using the citronella candles and mosquito coils might leave parts of you exposed to bites. Fans work well, but if you are out of the way of those fans, you leave yourself open to bites. Traps and zappers are also not 100% effective in preventing all bites.
Using natural and DIY mosquito repellent and control methods might still leave your yard and property with a mosquito problem. If the risk of mosquito-borne diseases outweighs the worry about chemical treatments, then it might be time to call in some help. Most diseases carried by mosquitoes can be life-threatening and have long-term effects.
Stop worrying about mosquitoes and enjoy your yard and call your local pest control experts for a consultation.
